Our Columbia class coin is not only representative of the US Navy's latest submarine class and replacement for the Ohio class ballistic missile submarine (the most important part of the US's nuclear triad), but also pays tribute to the US Submarine sailors of WWII. The front of our coin is in the shape of a wolf's head, containing glow-in-the-dark eyes. The wolf reference is to pay homage to the US Submarine Service and the 'wolf packs' they would use towards the end of World War II to hunt the enemy. The Columbia will serve a similar role as the Ohio class and 'hide with pride'; as a result, the Columbias' will not hunt in wolf packs. The coin front is also emblazoned with 'Columbia Class', enlisted and officer dolphins, the nuclear symbol to represent the power source of the submarines, and Mintonator (my boat nickname). The rear of our coin has 'Wolves of the Deep', 'USN' with Navy crow, Trident missile (which will be carried on Columbia), and an artist's rendition of the new submarine. As the Columbia class submarines are not currently in service, actual characteristics of the boat are not fully representative of what the submarine will look like.
Our coin from SubMerch is made of brass and quality enamels for a high gloss finish. This coin can also spin like a top if placed on the wolfs chin and rotated.
